As public or collective urban spaces, historical bazaars have always helped form civil life. Unfortunately, as a result of modern consumer lifestyle, shopping malls have widely replaced historical bazaars without having ever played the role of bazaars in a real sense; for this, historical bazaars have lost their roles as the socioeconomic axis of cities and undergone physical and functional transformations. Meanwhile, changing historical bazaars in adapting to the contemporary era and their future status should be taken into account by urban planners and officials, as well as architects. The goal of this study was to provide a future research analysis of historical bazaars and present alternative futures. This study employed a layered analysis of causes at four levels and used the semi-structured interview to investigate changing historical bazaars and to present alternative solutions based on the views of architecture and urban planning experts. As revealed by the interviews, it was determined that consumption hegemonic discourses, consumption democratization, modernist discourses, individualism, modernism, diversity-seeking, luxuries and hedonism, secularism discourses, materialism, capitalism, fading religious discourses, privatization, personalization, fashionism, market brands, virtualization and media discourses, globalization and technology-driven discourses, among others, served as the discourses that support the modern status of historical bazaars and their blurring roles in metropolises. Concerning alternative futures, experts referred to national development discourses, collectivism discourses, justice and progress, balance discourses between private and public investment, user typological diversity, technology-driven discourses, cultural heritage preservation with modern development (thriving Tourism Industry), and participation and interaction discourses as guidelines supporting the macro-level social causes. In considering the components affecting various dimensions of macro-level social causes, , organizations can work to develop executive principles to materialize those discourses and meet user needs in the end.
